Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840 Ake Ake Ake

“The Treaty of Waitangi 1840 Forevermore”

Te Tiriti o Waitangi - known in English as the Treaty of Waitangi - is an agreement between tangata whenua (the first peoples of Aotearoa) and the British Crown. This document gave consent for British people to settle in Aotearoa. Following He Whakaputanga 5 years earlier, it reaffirmed Māori would retain full, exclusive and undisturbed rights over our whenua, moana, taonga and everything in between.
